Nick and Lucy Kirby stood in their living room, fear and uncertainty gripping them like a vice. A few moments before, two police officers had quizzed them about the visit of a man who had subsequently been unlawfully killed.

For that, read murdered.

The officers questioned them about a past that they’d long considered dead and buried. Morgan had come to their doorstep, and they’d been foolish enough to let him in. At least that had been Nick’s take. Lucy had seen no choice on seeing him standing there. A man she’d once been in love with. How could she turn him away?

The police had left, but the Kirbys were still anxious. They’d been so stupid and naïve. How could they have let this happen?

Nick, seething, wanted to go round to Lloyd Havard’s house and give him a mouthful. But Lucy had calmed him down. It would only make things worse.

‘What now, Luce? Are you sending me away to my mother’s again?’

Nick stood in the hallway, his jacket on. She didn’t answer him.

‘What the hell are we supposed to say to Gemma if she phones again, and I’m not here? She’s not stupid. I won’t take a week to fix a fence. She’s going to twig something’s up.’

Mention of their daughter made Lucy squeeze her eyes shut again. This was all about her. About preserving what they were as a family and not letting anything break it up.

‘Where were you last Thursday, Nick?’ Lucy’s voice came out as a bare whisper.

‘Christ, this again? What the fuck do you take me for, Luce?’

She wouldn’t look at him.

‘Thursday I was at work. Like I always am.’

‘Out on a job or in the office?’

‘I spent the morning at a hospital in Merthyr. The roof is chock full of aerated concrete. The whole bloody lot has to come down. Then I was in the office writing up the report. After that. I was here with you.’

‘They’ll check,’ Lucy said.

‘Let them fucking check. I didn’t do anything.’

Lucy trembled. Nick shouted out his protestation. It was not something she was used to hearing. He’d never raised his voice at her or Gemma. But since Morgan had come, she’d heard him angry more times than she could remember.

‘I know what I said. I know I threatened him. But I didn’t do anything, Luce, For Christ’s sake.’

‘I can’t help thinking about it. What happened to him? I can’t help thinking—’

Nick Kirby took three steps forward and held his wife.

She sobbed quietly in his arms.

‘You can’t do this to yourself, Luce. It’ll tear you apart.’

‘I can’t help thinking about Gemma.’

‘No, we agreed not to bring her into this. We agreed.’

‘But—’

‘No buts, Luce. We agreed.’

‘But what if the police keep digging?’

‘We deal with that if it happens. Not before. Now, can I at least sleep in my own bed tonight?’

‘Yes,’ Lucy whispered.

‘Jesus, what a mess. Even after he’s bloody dead, Mark Morgan can—’

‘Not his fault,’ Lucy protested vehemently. ‘I can guess what you think, but I’m not protecting him. It’s not that. But he did nothing.
